Never saw a biden bumper sticker. Saw my first Biden yard sign last week.
Asked my friends what they'd have read into it if I told them pre-2016 that someone could go the entire year-long primary season, and get within three months of a general presidential election without seeing one public supporter of the major party's dominant candidate. Consensus is 'I'da said "He fucked" '.
But hey, this is the second election where the Dems are flat out saying enthusiasm doesn't matter, voters will turn out on their own to vote against Donald Trump or else. Nobody currently alive was around in 2004 so the idea of a massively unpopular bumbler winning a second term based on incumbency advantages and the hardcore unflagging hatred and discipline of right-wing voters is obviously inconceivable. Plus, GOP voters are telling pollsters they won't vote for Trump, and Nate Silver says Biden's got a 70% shot so, those are all clear indications that Trump Will Not Win.
God, now I'm looking through the Biden store to see if he even sells stickers. I can't believe we picked the worst candidate for this. Ok, one of the worst. I see you, Bloomberg.
I live on the edge of a metropolitan area in a purple state. In my neighborhood, there is exactly 1 Yang sign (still up! but definitely worse for wear), 1 Black Lives Matter sign, and 1 Trump flag (this yard also has a free-standing wooden cross in it and a trampoline).
Two weekends ago I took a bike ride along the coast up in Ventura County. There are long stretches where people set up camp for the weekend along PCH overlooking the ocean. It's lined with big campers like a nascar race. As I was biking along, I could see the row of flagpoles coming from said campers approaching. All I could tell as I approached was "arriving in Trumpville". Many, many Trump flags (below American flags), a gadsen flag, and at least one thin blue line monstrosity. After I passed most of those, something that made me laugh - a fucking biden 2020 flag! Have maybe seen 2 biden stickers in LA in the past year, but this guy had a big, full size biden flag on his camper amidst a ton of Trump ones. I laughed because there's no way that guy supports biden that hard, he definitely got it just to oppose all the trump ones. Sorry I didn't get a pic.
I see a lot of BLM banners and yard signs, a decent amount of Bernie and Warren stuff, but basically nothing relating to Biden. This is a blue state, albeit one he won in the primary though almost assuredly due to last-minute drop-outs rather than deep popularity.
It's irrelevant here, he'll win big. But when I was in California in 2008 and 2012 Obama signs and bumper stickers were everywhere. It speaks to his general mediocre favorability ratings and low enthusiasm polling. People will vote for him, but spend money to advertise that? Nah, and even in swing states I doubt there's much effort to get people to put up yard signs- they probably haven't even gotten called from the campaign.
I live in a blue city in a red state. A ton of Sanders stickers from 16 and 20, followed by residual HRC 16, Warren, and then Biden stickers in that order.
There is a disconcertingly high number of Biden bumper stickers and yard signs in the wealthy areas of my North Jersey bedroom suburb. They've been there since way before he became the presumptive nominee, too.
I only saw one biden bumper sticker and it was at the Trader Joe’s in the valley by ventura and winnetka in February? all around weird vibes, wish I had taken a photo
I walk around this area about 3-4mi most mornings so observing yard signs, bumper stickers, and flags is a long time hobby. For context, this is Elijah Cummings old district, Cummings is the politician I've voted for more times than anyone over the past 20 years. He was replaced by Kwasi Mfume, who actually held the seat before Cummings once already and is a former NAACP head. Registered democrats outnumber registered republicans in this district about 4 to 1 and it is majority black & brown demographically, though in general Baltimore is still pretty segregated a lot of the time. When I'm not dodging the rodents infesting everywhere, my observations go something like this.
BLM - I stopped counting at about 30 or so yard signs. They are everywhere, obviously. There is one house that covered all their windows with cardboard and wrote in bold marker a variety of things such as 'white silence is violence', names of people killed by police, etc. I saw another that was 'matters is the minimum'.
Joe Biden - I counted about a dozen yard signs. Usually next to a BLM sign.
Trump - there was a single Trump flag for a while, but I guess they got sick of their neighbors hating them because now it's been replaced with an American flag. There's about 3-4 'Dump Trump' flags as well around.
Bumper stickers - these are a little more varied. A lotta ACLU. A lot of Warren or Bernies, but more Warren overall, in what I'd describe as the 'whiter' streets around here. I know I've seen at least 10 Biden bumper stickers personally, but again this district is about as strong as it gets as far as Obama/Biden era popularity goes. I saw one old truck with something linking Obama to Bin Laden, but I think they may have missed a memo. I'll see an occasional Infowars. I don't have time to list the rest of the incredible variety of totally crazy and hilarious ones I have seen over the years. But that's mostly because crazy and hilarious is not a terrible descriptor for this city in general.
Since I live in the OC, one of the few Romney-Clinton counties, I bet I can find one if I look hard enough. No memory of actually seeing one in the wild though. I saw lots of Warren, lots of Bernie, some Kamala Harris but fewer than there should have been here in California, and maybe one or two Klobuchar, Booker and Mayo Pete. Lots of Bloomberg signs for those few weeks he was running (but no bumper stickers), and... not a single anything from Biden that I remember seeing. I'ma find one and take a picture.
